Abstract:

In recent years, digital technology, as an advanced productive force, has actively propelled the evolution of international division of labor, which remains governed by the logic of capital. However, existing literature offers scant research interpreting the impact of digital technology on the international division of labor from the perspective of Marxist political economy. This paper employs dialectical materialism to analyze the evolution of international division of labor driven by digital technology, grounded in Marxist political economy theory. Research indicates that in the digital economy era, driven by production logic and governed by the logic of capital, digital technology propels the international division of labor toward broader domains and deeper levels. This has triggered an evolution in the pattern of international division of labor: its form has shifted from linear chains to multidimensional networks. Digital platforms increasingly serve as the hubs of international division of labor networks, while the division exhibits characteristics of decentralization, clustering, regionalization, shortening of supply chains, localization, nearshoring, and friendshoring. The digitally-driven international division of labor increasingly integrates more countries, workers, and means of production into a dynamically evolving global network. This heightens the socialization of production and labor, advances the development of productive forces, and provides the material foundation and technological conditions for realizing the free and comprehensive development of humanity. At the same time, in today's world, where the international division of labor system remains dominated by the logic of capital, key means of production, such as digital platforms, have become tools for multinational monopolistic capital in developed countries to maximize profits. The international division of labor has thus become a crucial link in capital's pursuit of profit maximization, exacerbating global development imbalances and the alienation of labor. This, in turn, impedes the further advancement of productive forces and the free and comprehensive development of humanity.Compared to previous literature, this paper expands in two key aspects: First, it explores the intrinsic mechanisms by which digital technology drives the evolution of international division of labor based on Marxist political economy theory, offering a distinct theoretical perspective that broadens existing research on the impact of digital technology on the international division of labor. Second, unlike existing research on the impact of digital technology on the international division of labor that primarily focuses on productive forces, this paper employs a dialectical analysis grounded in production logic and logic of capital to examine such impact. Within a capital-logic-dominated international division of labor system, digital technology propels this division not merely because it represents advanced productive forces, but more significantly because it serves as a tool for capital to maximize profits. The international division of labor driven by digital technology constitutes a crucial link in capital's pursuit of profit maximization.
